Comic subjects were popular during the daguerreian era (ca. 1840-1860). Whimsical and witty, they reflected Americans’ love of humor. During the 1830s, the first purely comic almanacs were published. At the same time, troupes of comedic performers and burlesque shows drew large audiences as they traveled around the country.
