DescriptionThe vase is comprised of two major components: a flask-shaped container with two handles at the neck surrounded by a gilded metal mount. The glass container is cut and engraved with designs of marsh plants, vines, and cattails with a frog on one side and a beetle on the other. The gilded metal mount consists of a ring wrapping around the base of the glass container from which four branches, with flowers and leaves, extend. The two branches located on the narrow sides of the glass container extend up the side of the container and through the glass handles at the neck. The two other branches on the wide sides of the glass container extend only a few inches above the support ring. Each of the four branches also extends below the ring of the base to create feet that support the piece.Gallery Label

Made by the French manufacturer Baccarat, this vase represents an interest in combining materials and influences from various cultures and historical periods. The engraved frog, insects, and plants were inspired by Japanese prints of the mid-1800s. The gilded plum blossoms follow the European tradition of placing precious objects in metal mounts.
