DescriptionImage of a man with long hair and glasses seated on a bench with three women whose legs are crossed at the ankles.Gallery Label
While a college philosophy student in the early 1970s, Mike Mandel embarked on a project in which he posed with strangers for casual black-and-white images. With his long hair and eyeglasses, he is recognizable alongside willing participants in a variety of everyday scenarios: standing on sidewalks, seated on a city bench, or peeking out from behind a group of children. This playful image predates “photobombing” or “selfie” taking, though Mandel’s concept, which draws upon the snapshot tradition, certainly looks similar.
