Gallery Label

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a regular visitor to the Moulin Rouge, a cabaret built in 1889 close to Montmartre in the north of Paris and still in existence today. The Moulin Rouge is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the can-can dance. Although Lautrec generally focused on the cabaret performers, he also showed a keen interest in the audiences of the Moulin Rouge. Here a group of men of varied ages surround a young woman, alluding to the cabaret's reputation as a site associated with prostitution. The title of the lithograph may reference the figure stroking his beard in the foreground.
