Yvette Guilbert was a popular cabaret singer in Paris in the late 1800s. Slim and stern in appearance, she performed in long black gloves that accentuated her dramatic gestures. Yvette met Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec at the height of her success and instantly became one of his favorite subjects. Never one to flatter, here he depicts the singer in the harsh glare of gas stage lights. He also plays up her trademark black gloves to emphasize her crude gesture.
