Color lithography employs the same processes as traditional lithography, but separate stones and inks are used for each color. Additional effects could be created by layering colors of varying transparencies, seen here in the overlaid green and black that constitute the dark greenish hues around the border. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec also used a splatter technique when applying a greasy drawing fluid onto the stone, resulting in the gray mist that fills the foreground hand and musical instrument. The poster’s eye-catching effects and large scale successfully advertised both the subject and the artist.
