DescriptionThe ofuda portrays Fudō Myōō seated firmly upon a rocky outcrop rising from a body of water. His fierce expression conveys unwavering determination to protect the faithful from malevolent forces. In his right hand, he raises a sword vertically, ready to cut through ignorance and doubt; in his left, he holds a lasso used to bind wayward desires. Dramatic flames form a halo like backdrop, symbolizing the burning away of obstacles and distractions. Beneath his crossed legs, the inscription “Naritasan” is carved into the rock. Flanking the deity below are his youthful attendants: Kongara dōji 矜羯羅童子 (Skt. Kimkara), holding a lotus stem to the right of the inscription, and seated Seitaka dōji 制多迦童子 (Skt. Cetaka) to the left.Provenance
