“Of course there are films, there are photographs . . . But it’s not a substitute, because the unique moment cannot be canned. This is an important aspect of our temporary works.” —Christo, speaking to the relationship between photographs and his finished works.
While Wolfgang Volz’s photographs of Wrapped Walk Ways cannot replace the experience of having been in Loose Park in October 1978, every piece of the project—from Christo’s preparatory works to Volz’s photographs—are evidence of the artists’ creative choices. Vantage point, cropping, and orientation were carefully considered and affect the way Wrapped Walk Ways is appreciated today, nearly five decades later.
