By the time Elise Kirk encountered this loaf of yeast bread at the Missouri State Fair, the prizewinning entry had begun to mold. She found symbolism in this specimen, which had won a premium blue ribbon in the men's category. "To me, there was something poetic about it," Kirk recalls. "I saw this tension between aspiration and growing stale, which comes from stasis."
