While photographing a small family farmhouse in northern Missouri, Elise Kirk noticed a caged live rabbit on the front lawn held in place by a swan-shaped lawn ornament. "It was important that I build a picture around this tension between the bunny and the swan," notes Kirk. She had set up her large-format camera and was waiting for the light to shift when a young girl entered the frame and climbed onto a horse-shaped tire swing. "Photographs are all about this intersection of intention and chance, and this one really nails that for me."
