During hot, humid Midwestern summers, stock tanks filled with fresh, cool water often become makeshift pools on farms or in rural areas. To make this image, Elise Kirk convinced her mother's friend to climb into the tub for a photograph in her back yard, a place she often visited as a child. "When I was making this work, I revisited sites from my childhood memories, but I was also looking at regionalist painters like John Steuart Curry, who included stock tanks in his work." His painting The Bathers is part of the Nelson-Atkins's collection.
