This street (named for the famous philosopher René Descartes) was located in an older part of Paris and slated for demolition. This is one of the many photographs Charles Marville took of Paris during the radical redesign and modernization of the city in the 1860s. Originally trained as a painter, Marville became an acclaimed photographer of landscapes, architecture, and people.
