DescriptionImage of cobblestone street lined with tall buildings and street lights which extend over the narrow sidewalk. Watering cans and brooms hang in front of the shop near the lower left. A man dressed in a suit and hat stands at the corner leaning against a building wall, which is covered in French advertisements. He has his hand on his hip as he smokes a pipe and looks directly at the viewer.Exhibition History

This street (named for the famous philosopher René Descartes) was located in an older part of Paris and slated for demolition. This is one of the many photographs Charles Marville took of Paris during the radical redesign and modernization of the city in the 1860s. Originally trained as a painter, Marville became an acclaimed photographer of landscapes, architecture, and people.
