DescriptionImage of a narrow cobblestone street between two buildings; street signs attached to the builings indicate the intersection of Place Maubert. There are shop windows with wares for sale.Gallery LabelAppointed by the city of Paris as its official photographer in 1862, Charles Marville documented areas slated for demolition, including this street that was located just a few blocks from the Louvre, off the Rue de Rivoli. During the 1850s and 1860s, Paris experienced a massive urban transformation, as its picturesque medieval streets were razed to make way for the grand boulevards and architectural renovations that modernized the city.
