Evelyn Hofer created elegant, warm, and humane pictures using a large 4×5-inch camera on a tripod. Hofer photographed people wherever she found them, and always sought a sense of quiet, timeless dignity. In the course of her long career, she worked in both black and white and color, specializing in portraiture and architectural studies. Beginning in the mid-1950s, she collaborated with noted authors to produce poetic studies of cities such as Florence, London, New York, Washington, DC, and Dublin.
