DescriptionImage of three women wearing dresses and hats standing outside of a Pentecostal church. The wall behind them resembles a stained glass window.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
Three well-dressed women stand outside a Pentecostal Church in Harlem, New York. The women appear dignified and curious, aware of Hofer’s presence and returning the photographer’s gaze. Their colorful attire, set against the church’s patterned window front, create an arresting street portrait. The photograph goes beyond documentation, to suggest a deeper concern with sociological portraiture.
