A restless and rebellious spirit, Robert Frank left his native Switzerland in 1947 for New York City. Working with a small 35mm camera in a quick and candid way, Frank made deeply personal images of everyday people and places. Like the Beat poets and jazz musicians of the time, he was interested in a raw and intuitive form of expression. He made his best-known pictures, including this one, in 1955–1956 on a cross-country drive that resulted in his landmark book The Americans (1959).
