Funded by a Guggenheim Fellowship, Frank photographed across the United States from 1955– 1956, making a survey of American culture and daily life. This trip resulted in The Americans (1958), one of the most influential photo books ever published. Hoboken (Parade) is the first image in the book. It sets the tone for Frank’s unflinching reckoning with a society unsettled by war, civil protests, and divisive political debates.
