Linnaeus Tripe’s view of an Indian temple is at once direct and aesthetically refined. The beautiful textural “grain” of this print stems from his use  of negatives made of paper rather than glass—the granularity comes from the fibrous structure of the paper itself. Tripe joined the East India Company army at the age of 18 and was stationed in India through the 1840s. He learned photography  on his return to England in the early 1850s.  He began photographing in India in December 1854, focusing on religious temples and other important structures.
