DescriptionImage of a young boy wearing a gingham shirt, shorts, and knee socks seated in a grassy pasture with his arm around a dog and a rifle across his lap. A pony with a saddle and a wicker basket stands beside them.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
After briefly pursuing a military career and serving as a member of Parliament, Horatio Ross became a respected amateur photographer. This image of a boy (likely one of Ross’s five sons) with his dog and pony captures the photographer’s love of the outdoors. An avid sportsman and marksman, Ross often took images of friends and family members engaged in sporting ventures.
