DescriptionCylindrical earthenware decorated with large black-outline eagle or mythological raptor highlighted with enamel colors in red, blue, teal and yellow with bands of stylized feathers.Gallery LabelThéodore Deck, innovator in French ceramics during the mid-19th century, used the vivid coloring of Islamic ceramics in this design of a mythological eagle ready for attack. Known for his Islamic-inspired vibrant blue glazes, Deck experimented with numerous artistic styles. This colorful bird is based on Chinese examples popular in France in this period. Deck exhibited at most of the world’s fairs from 1871 to 1889, garnering numerous medals.
