DescriptionStanding nude woman cropped from neck to knees; proper left hand placed on left hip and proper right arm down by side; and proper right leg extended slightly forward. Contour line drawing with minimal shadingGallery Label
This untitled drawing is one of multiple sketches dating from the late 1920s that Ault created depicting the female nude. His treatment of the form expresses his primary interest in the play of light and shade across the model’s body and the negative space created by her arm akimbo. The unusual way the figure is cropped by the top, right and lower edge of the sheet adds both interest and an eerie mystery to the composition.
