Rome in the late 16th and early 17th centuries was a magnet for Northern European artists, who considered their education incomplete without a visit to Italy and its antiquities. This drawing looks fresh enough to have been drawn from life. However, it is probably imaginary, though inspired by the scenery of the Roman Forum.
