In late June 1867, O'Sullivan took an excursion along the newly built Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) line from Sacramento to the as-yet-unfinished Summit Tunnel. The Long Ravine Bridge, just outside Colfax, had been completed in 1865. The railroad was key to the fundamental idea of the King Survey: to survey the territory embracing the span of the planned transcontinental line from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to the eastern border of California.
