Timothy H. O’Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs. The Art Institute of Chicago, October 22, 2011 - January 15, 2012, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, April 7 - September 2, 2012, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, UT, January 23 - May 26, 2014, no. 38.
In late March, O'Sullivan and some of the survey party made a side trip into California to Mono Lake. An area of obvious past volcanic activity, the terrain around the lake was covered with jagged rocks and outcroppings of obsidian (lava cooled to form volcanic glass). Because Mono Lake has no outlet to the sea, the water is alkaline and supports a limited range of aquatic life. In this stark and otherworldly terrain, O'Sullivan photographed the lake and craters of extinct volcanoes.
