Timothy H. O’Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs. The Art Institute of Chicago, October 22, 2011 - January 15, 2012, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, April 7 - September 2, 2012, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, UT, January 23 - May 26, 2014, no. 10.
This image exemplifies O'Sullivan's self-reflexive genius. Close examination of this photograph suggests that the man in the boat-possibly O'Sullivan's companion, Salt Lake City photographer Charles Savage-is contemplating a freshly processed glass-plate negative of the scene behind him. The result is a fascinating meditation on the act of "photographic seeing" itself-an appreciation, at once, of the majestic original scene and the allure of the photographic representation.
