Timothy H. O’Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs. The Art Institute of Chicago, October 22, 2011 - January 15, 2012, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, April 7 - September 2, 2012, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, UT, January 23 - May 26, 2014, no. 11.
Following the track of the Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) up into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, O'Sullivan and the survey party crossed into Nevada through Donner Pass. At the summit, O'Sullivan photographed the pass and Donner Lake, both named for the party of emigrants stranded there in the winter of 1846-47. Note the "T.H.O'S" scratched in the lower left corner of this negative; it is unclear why O'Sullivan "signed" a total of seven of his King Survey plates in this manner.
