O'Sullivan and William Bailey, the survey's botanist, toured the smelting facility (where ore was melted for extraction) of the Montezuma Silver Works in Oreana. This was a highly productive Nevada mining settlement; here, teams of oxen generate power and move quantities of rock; a large accumulation of ore awaits distribution; and piles of wood sit ready to fuel the furnaces. O'Sullivan's own presence is indicated by his portable dark-tent on the left.
