O'Sullivan made several trips into Ruby Valley and the East Humboldt Mountains. Ruby Valley was once a prehistoric lake-a fact indicated by the existence of beach ridges and hot springs. O'Sullivan photographed the rough terrain of the high Nevada desert, including a ridge of land known as Longitude Butte. Notably, this image includes his own wagon, dead center in the distance. O'Sullivan sought to convey not simply what he saw, but something of the experience of actually being there. His wagon is an acknowledgment of his own presence, an indication of scale and a suggestion of the sheer inhospitality of the place.
