Clarence King was a brilliant geologist as well as something of an artist and Romantic. He named this formation Karnak, after the famed archaeological ruins of Egypt. In so doing, he linked the rich cultural past of the Old World to the deep geological time of the New World. This part of the Montezuma Range was notable for its columnar rhyolite (basalt), created by the cooling of volcanic lava.
