DescriptionImage of a man wearing a jacket and hat seated on a bus with his elbow resting on the seat in front of him. Cars and storefronts are visible through the window behind him.Gallery LabelThis image reflects the straightforward nature of Edmund Teske’s early work: a quiet, poetic image of a stranger on the streetcar, lost in thought. Teske’s serious use of the camera began in the 1930s, as part of his broader interests in painting, poetry, music, theater, and Hindu mythology. After teaching at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Teske moved to Los Angeles in the 1940s, where he worked at Paramount Pictures in the still photography department and made more highly manipulated personal work.
