Robert Adams, who came to photography from a background in literature, has been the most passionate and committed landscape photographer of the last 30 years. Rejecting any simple faith in an idealized landscape, Adams creates quiet, bittersweet images that unite a sense of promise and loss, transcendence, and failure. His photographs prompt us to consider the contrast between myths and realities, and to think of the land as home rather than as scenic backdrop. Striking a balance between ideas of the timeless and transitory, this image was made at dusk, a moment not clearly day or night.
