DescriptionImage of the front of a small house; figure in sillouette inside the front picture window.Gallery LabelIn this image, the dark silhouette of a woman is seen through the picture window of a middle-class suburban tract house. Robert Adams composes the scene such that the figure appears tiny and alone, framed within the rigid formal geometry of the architecture. This photograph derives from Adams’ series The New West, which focuses on the rapidly changing, human-altered landscape around Denver, Colorado, during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Though lacking any overt social or political commentary, Adams’ photographs collectively convey a sense of melancholic loss, as humans appear increasingly removed from their natural surroundings.
