Ansel Adams is renowned for his meticulous technique and his love of the majestic Western American landscape. This photograph of the Ghost Ranch Hills, taken on a visit to Georgia O’Keeffe’s ranch in New Mexico, emphasizes the view and transient effects of light and dark. Printed to ensure maximum dramatic effect, this work demonstrates that interpretation was a natural part of Adams’ “straight photography” technique. Evoking his early training as a classical pianist, Adams famously said, “The negative is the score and the print is the performance.”
