Alfred Stieglitz began photographing clouds in 1922. Over the next eight years, he produced a total of about 350 images for his Equivalents series. Stieglitz’s notion of “equivalence” rested on the use of familiar subjects as symbols of inner thoughts and emotions. Here, the shapes and tones of the clouds act as metaphors for the human condition.
