On assignment during World War II for Life magazine, Bourke-White made bold and dramatic photographs under often perilous conditions. She began recording the conflict even before the U.S. became involved: this dramatic shot of a nighttime raid by German bombers was made in Moscow. From 1942 to 1945, Bourke-White photographed intensively throughout England, Italy, and Germany and even became the first woman to accompany an Air Force crew on a bombing mission.
