DescriptionImage of people walking on stairs (pedestrian crossing) in Rome. Signed, titled and dated in pencil on back of print. Artist's Paris stamp in ink and other notations also on back.Gallery LabelIn contrast to much of the fashion photography of this era, Klein's bold and provocative images were generally made outside the controlled environment of the studio. In his work at Paris Vogue from 1955 to 1965, Klein used new techniques and perspectives to reinvigorate the practice of fashion photography. In this image, Klein staged two models (Simone d'Aillencout and Nina de Vos) walking across a pedestrian crossing in Rome wearing similar yet opposite dresses. Using a telephoto lens to compress the visual space of the scene, Klein left room for accidental elements to enliven the composition: pedestrians move in and out of the frame and a Vespa scoots directly through the pathway of the models.
