Though Adams is best known for his meticulous technique and celebration of nature’s grandeur, this photograph stems from an important turning point in his early career. In this view of a famous adobe church—one of twelve images included in Taos Pueblo, a collaboration with the writer Mary Austin—Adams moved away from his earliest, soft-focus Pictorialist style to a simpler and bolder vision.
