DescriptionThis painting has a black background over which, thin, cream colored paint has been allowed to vertically run. Two large areas of cream paint are at the upper register of canvas, and four similiar, but smaller shapes occur below these. The work is composed primarily of dripping rivulets of paintGallery LabelPouring, dripping, and flinging paint, Pat Steir creates, at once, an illusionistic image of a waterfall and a physical record of liquid obeying the laws of gravity and force. In the process, she honors two esteemed traditions: Chinese landscape painting and American Abstract Expressionism.
Double Waterfall for a Simple Afternoon evokes a place where we observe the world rushing past. In temporarily succumbing to its relentless movement, we become one with the essence of change.
