NOTES:

[1] The Städtische Gemäldegalerie is now the Landesmuseum Mainz. According to Dr. Norbert Suhr, Dept. of Drawings and Prints, Landesmuseum Mainz, in a letter to Gregory Rubinstein, Sotheby’s London, January 22, 1997, this drawing was one of four by Rembrandt that were transferred to the Städtische Gemäldegalerie from the city library in 1892 and exchanged with Gilhofer & Ranschberg in 1938 for “a relief by Carl Theodor van Dalberg and a set of china.” A copy of Suhr’s letter was provided to the Nelson-Atkins by Sheldon Peck and is in the Nelson-Atkins curatorial files.

[2] Ibid. According to a history of the Gilhofer & Ranschburg firm published on their website (www.gilburg.com), the firm’s Lucerne branch ceased operations from 1938 until 1956.

[3] John Bender was the owner of Alden Galleries.
