Gallery Label
Ephraim Bonus, a friend and neighbor of Rembrandt, was an eminent Portuguese Jewish doctor who was also a translator and publisher of Hebrew writings. This etching is known in two states; that is, the marks on the original copper plate were altered after the first printing, resulting in a second printed image that differed from the first. For example: the incised lines that held the ink describing the man's ring in the first state were effaced, resulting in a ring in this printed state that appears more white. Also, the background appears darker than that of the first printing, due to the addition of incised lines of varying direction that carry more ink.
