DescriptionExtending horizontally across the foreground of the canvas is a road, painted in thin, vertical strokes of beige, and bordered by areas of green, suggesting a lawn. taken up by a small lake with an island, circled by a second road which branches off to lead the eye back into an urban commercial area of highrise buildings. Interspersed throughout the middle ground are mature trees and bushes painted rather summarily in greens and browns.Gallery Label"I look for the particular, not the general, and the real, not the ideal." -- Kansas City atist Wilbur Niewald
For his landscapes depicting the city he loved and knew so well, Niewald painted outoors directly from what he saw. What we see in Kansas City, View from Penn Valley Park is one painting in a series he made during the summer of 1989. Each portrait of the city was painted from a specific, well-studied vantage point and represents the "real" of that particular place as seen through Niewald's eyes.
