DescriptionView of an old railroad district and commercial area of downtown as seen from a grassy hill looking through an area of dense shrubbery and trees. Railroad tracks divide the composition horizontally. Single-story buildings lie just beyond the tracks and high-rise buildings are scattered along the horizon line. Colors predominating in this area are terra cotta, brown, and beige.Gallery LabelWilber Niewald's paintings of Kansas City are highly structured, realistic compositions which exude a sense of rational order and balance. The artist carefully places each brushstroke to reiterate the underlying form of the landscape, road or building. Architectural forms are painted in red tones and are juxtaposed against the blues and greens of nature. Each painting was created from a striking vantage point-an approach that enlivens what might otherwise be a rather ordinary urban scene. Faithfully observant of nature, Niewald has said, "I am not seeking a mood or any psychological depth. My paintings are just studies where I connect relationships between color and space and what I see."
