Exhibition HistoryNature Morte/Still Life, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, August 2, 2017-February 4, 2018, no cat., as Stem of Roses.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté was the leading flower illustrator in France. He studied floral paintings by earlier Dutch and Flemish masters and combined their approach with his keen interest in botany. He studied plant anatomy at the gardens of Trianon at Versailles during Marie Antoinette’s reign. Later, under Napoleon, he gained access to the Malmaison gardens. Redouté’s works attest to the value placed on art and scientific inquiry in France during the age of revolution.
Given by Charlotte Louise (née Thomas, ca. 1908-2002) Faeth, Kansas City, MO, to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1990.
