Exhibition HistoryNature Morte/Still Life, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, August 2, 2017-February 4, 2018, no cat., as Four Stems of Roses.
This complex image of four interlinking rose stems reflects Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s aspiration to represent plants “with all of the details of their organization.” He painted the subject on vellum, a fine animal skin often used for illuminated manuscripts and books. Redouté likely painted this work for an individual collector, since it does not follow the typical format of the single-flower stems he used as illustrations for publications.
Given by Charlotte Louise (née Thomas, ca. 1908-2002) Faeth, Kansas City, MO, to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1990.
