This portrait formed part of Van Dyck’s Iconography, an engraved series of portraits of famous contemporaries. Justus Sustermans (1597–1681) was court portraitist to the Medici family in Florence, though his origins, as with Van Dyck, were Flemish. His inclusion in the Iconography shows the international nature of the series. Here his elegant costume is more finished than the portrait of Jan Brueghel, reinforcing the high status Sustermans enjoyed at the Florentine court.
