Canaletto was one of the greatest 18th-century painter of townscapes. The present example shows the town of Dolo on the Brenta canal that still connects Venice and Padua today. In the foreground, there is a luxurious barge, used for carrying passengers. The short parallel strokes showing the ripples in the water are similar to Canaletto's technique for depicting water in his paintings.
