This view through a portico (or porch) does not depict an actual site in Venice but exists only in the artist’s imagination. One of a series of 33 prints, it combines domestic architecture with ancient Roman ruins in an effort to convey the romance of the city. The modest house framed by the center arch features a rooftop terrace used for drying clothing. On the right, a classical temple with its row of columns provides a striking contrast.
