Gallery LabelThis tower on the Venetian lagoon, demolished in the 19th century, could only be reached by boat, as shown here. This is a reminder of how the lagoon both gave Venice an incomparably beautiful setting and also protected the city from attack by land. Canaletto’s crisp etching technique vividly conveys the effect of sparkling sunlight.
