Gallery LabelThe forelegs of Masson’s frog curl inward, its webbed toes defined by mere dashes of green. The repeated arcs of its haunches, knees and back simultaneously describe its anatomy and reveal its characteristic form of locomotion: hopping. These sketchy lines further engage the viewer’s eye, endlessly moving it over the surface of the image in a playful recreation of the creature’s animated and awkward movements on land. The quickness of Masson’s gestures, the open whiteness of the paper and his green, brown and yellow palette capture the grassy freshness of an outdoor setting.
