Gallery LabelWhile living in Aspen, Colorado, and working on architecture and design projects, Herbert Bayer made a series of graphic depictions of water, including this example. Printing with black and white lithographic inks on prepared blue paper, he captured a swirling wave, splash and airborne droplets of water suspended in an elegant moment of time.
Bayer was an Austrian graphic designer, painter, photographer and architect. His work is strongly influenced by the minimalist "less is more" aesthetic of the German Bauhaus, where he studied and worked. In 1925, Bayer designed the sans-serif Universal typeface, known today as the digital font Architype Bayer.
